Albury – "Crossing Point" - "Millewa"

On 16 November 1824, explorers Hume and Hovell arrived at what their maps called "Crossing Point". Hume named the river after his father. BUT...

1830, Captain Charles Sturt

discovered the Hume River at its junction with the Murrumbidgee River. Not realising it was the "Hume" he named it the Murray River. Hume eventually falling into disuse. The Wiradjuri Aboriginal's name for the river was Millewa.

1843, Albury Post Office

opened 1st April but closed in 1845, then reopened in the township on 1 Feb1847.

1844 At Albury

a log punt established and serviced the crossing of the Murray river. By...

1847, Albury settlement

included two public houses and a handful of huts, a police barracks and a blacksmith.

1851 Albury a frontier town

with the separation of Victoria from New South Wales, and the border falling on the Murray River,.

1860, Albury became a Customs Post

between the two colonies because the first bridge across the Murray was built. . Albury was at this time starting to grow substantially with German speaking immigrants creating vineyards. You must visit the Jindera Museum.

1870S, Albury

builds a butter factory, flour mill, wineries and locally brewed cider were established.

1881, Albury a Railway Hub.

The railway line from Sydney arrived in Albury but NSW and Victoria had different gauges. It was not until 1962 when the first train ran direct from Sydney to Melbourne.

1888, Albury built its first public school house

inovated by the city's first mayor James Fallon.

Today Albury has a number of historic buildings and structures remaining from this century.
